The United States of America is at the risk of losing it's status as the world largest economy to China in the next 10 years, according to a study conducted by an immigration advocacy group founded by tech industry leaders, in conjunction with George Mason University. The report projects that the American economy will be three-quarters the size of China’s by 2050 under the current U.S. population trends and immigration levels.

President Joe Biden has put forward suggested changes to the nation’s immigration laws in order to make them more “humane” in a proposal sent by him to the US Congress. The proposal aims to allow more immigrants to gain legal permanent residence, thereby increasing the number of permanent residents by almost 375,000 each year according to the study.

The Republican lawmakers, however, have rejected Biden’s approach and blamed him for a recent spike in irregular migration at the U.S. southwest border. The counter argument to his immigration bill is that increasing immigration numbers could lead to the displacement of American-born workers, as the U.S. economy recovers from the pandemic.

The study’s co-author, an associate professor at George Mason University, said that “Immigration has basically become the fulcrum of nativist and nationalist politics, which is really about a concern for putting America first." He added “If you look at the numbers here, the best way that we can put America first is by welcoming newcomers."
